Mekong Adaptation Strategy and Action Plan Addresses Transboundary Adaptation Challenges in the Lower Mekong Basin

MASAP in CambodiaThe impact of climate change in the Lower Mekong Basin (LMB) countries – Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam and Thailand – is particularly severe, as their economies rely heavily on climate sensitive sectors such as agriculture and fisheries. The cascade of climate change impacts is already putting people’s livelihoods at risk despite the efforts undertaken by the individual countries.

An analysis of the four LMB countries’ policy responses to water-related impacts of climate change showed that these efforts were not sufficient to address transboundary climate change challenges. This has led the Mekong River Commission and its four member countries to prepare a river basin-wide strategy – Mekong Adaptation Strategy and Action Plan (MASAP).

Lecturers and Students in University of Heng Samrin Tbong Khmum are trained on Climate Change

Traing in Tbong Khmum 28Sep2017 1Tbong Khmum, 28 September 2017​–Department of Climate Change (DCC), General Secretariat of the National Council for Sustainable Development (NCSD), with support from Cambodia Climate Change Alliance (CCCA) organized a“Training Workshop on Climate Change” for lecturers and students in University of Heng Samrin Tbong Khmum, Tbong Khmum province, with participation of 152 people, including 68 women, to build capacity on the climate change terminology, cause and effect, impact, vulnerability at national and international levels in responding to climate change, and adaptation and mitigation options. The event is presided over by H.E. Pin Vannaro, the rector, and Dr. Heng Chanthoeun, deputy director of DCC.

Launch of the Cambodia Component of the Regional Programme on Strengthening the Governance of Climate Change Finance to Enhance Gender Equality 2017-2022

UNDP Sida Regional Launch 27Sep2017Phnom Penh, 27th September 2017, General Secretariat of the National Council for Sustainable Development (NCSD) and UNDP-Sida launched a second phase of the “Cambodia Component of the Regional Programme on Strengthening the Governance of Climate Change Finance to Enhance Gender Equality 2017-2022”, financially supported by Sweden at Raffles Le Royal Hotel. The programme focuses on strengthening the integration of climate change issues in the national budget, also taking into account gender and vulnerable groups. It will generate evidence on the links between climate investments and growth at a macro level and how climate investments affect vulnerable groups, including a gender perspective at micro level. From this evidence it will help demonstrate to decision-makers how investing in climate change adaptation and mitigation will deliver higher economic and social benefits.

Youth in Koh Kong Province Receives Training on Climate Change

Youth training in KKGKoh Kong Province, 15 August 2017​–Department of Climate Change (DCC), General Secretariat of the National Council for Sustainable Development (GSSD), with support from Cambodia Climate Change Alliance (CCCA) organized aTraining Workshop on Climate Change for Youth to increase understanding on climate change. The event was presided over by H.E. Chuop Paris, National Council for Sustainable Development (NCSD)’s Deputy Secretary General and H.E. Sun Dara, Deputy Provincial Governor of Koh Kong, and counted with the participation of 152 people, including 76 women.

First Meeting of the Climate Change Technical Working Group with Development Partners

CCTWG DP 27Jun2017Phnom Penh, 27 June 2017 – Governmental ministries/agencies and development partners involved in the climate change response in Cambodia, met for the first time this morning to discuss the establishment of ongoing policy dialogue and coordination between Government and its climate change partners, and to address some of the most pressing coordination issues.

Key concerned stakeholders are Climate Change Technical Working Group members (CCTWG) composed of 19 ministries/agencies, Development Partners, NGOs, Private Sectors, and Academia, totally 49 institutions. This 1st meeting is organized by Department of Climate Change, General Secretariat of the National Council for Sustainable Development (NCSD) with support from Cambodia Climate Change Alliance (CCCA) under presidency of H.E. Tin Ponlok, Secretary General of the NCSD.
