CC Response: Moving from Strategy to Implementation in 2015

The Annual Conference of the Ministry of Environment held last February provided an opportunity to take stock of the progress made in the implementation of the climate change response laid out in the Cambodia Climate Change Strategic Plan 2014-2023. The balance was clearly positive, highlighting a number of areas where the efforts of the Department of ClimateChange (DCC), working with ministriesand various stakeholders at the central and sub-national level, have delivered significant results in 2015.

Since December, the only source of free water for the 600 families of Tomnobdach village has been a dirt hole three metres wide.

Located at the bottom of a quarry in O’Chhrou district’s O’Beichoan commune, the long descent in 40-degree heat is a daily necessity for 69-year-old Chhorm Yuth and her three grandchildren.

The water is a murky, otherworldly blue. A metal sign planted at the edge of the hole tells villagers to take hygiene precautions.

Sectoral M&E Frameworks are established to track MoH and MAFF climate change responses

MESectorPhnom Penh: 07 April 2016,​Sectoral monitoring and evaluation frameworks of climate change response are being developed by the Ministry of Health (MoH) and the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) in collaboration with the General Secretariat of the National Council for Sustainable Development (GSSD), and with the support from the Cambodia Climate Change Alliance (CCCA), International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED), and Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ).

Press Release: Cambodia’s National Climate Change Monitoring and Evaluation Framework Launched with a Core Set of Indicators Defined and a Dedicated M&E Team

MELaunch07Apr16Phnom Penh, 07 April 2016 – General Secretariat of the National Council for Sustainable Development (GSSD) on Thursday launched Cambodia’s National Climate Change Monitoring and Evaluation Framework with a core set of indicators defined and a dedicated M&E team, aimed at tracking the country’s progress in addressing the challenges posed by climate change.The Framework consists of a core set of 8 national level indicators to which 2 to 3 indicators per sector will be added as sectors develop their own sectoral climate change M&E frameworks.

Department of Climate Change Launches 2nd Round Grant to Support Climate Change Action Plan Implementation

LaunchingGrant05Apr2016Phnom Penh, 05 April 2016: Department of Climate Change (DCC), General Secretariat of the National Council for Sustainable Development, launches its 2nd round of call for proposals to support the implementation of Climate Change Action Plans (CCAPs) in qualifying ministries approved CCAPs with fund support through Cambodia Climate Change Alliance (CCCA). Those eligible ministries include Ministry of Environment, Ministry of Industry and Handicraft, Ministry of Mines and Energy, Ministry of Land Management, Urban Planning and Construction, Ministry of Tourism and Ministry of Information.

Exploring opportunities for climate smart investments from the private sector

Private sector mapping consultation 17Mar 2016

Phnom Penh 17th March 2016,

50 representatives of the private sector, Government ministries, NGOs and development partners participated in consultations on opportunities to increase private investment in the climate change response.

H.E. Tin Ponlok, Secretary General of the National Council for Sustainable Development (NCSD), indicated that “private sector funds, globally, represented 60% of total climate change finance in 2014”. While public funds, and in particular support from developed countries are extremely important for Cambodia as a developing and climate vulnerable country, rapid economic growth also offers opportunities to increase the flow of private investments in climate-smart solutions. These investments do not only help address climate change impacts on the economy, they also deliver economic, social and environmental benefits and contribute to sustainable growth in Cambodia.
